How Tie-Down Systems Work

Tie-down systems are the industry standard for wheelchair securement in accessible vehicles. Four anchor straps attach to designated points on the wheelchair frame and to floor-mounted anchors in the vehicle, holding the wheelchair firmly in place during transport.

Available in manual (hand-tightened webbing straps) and powered (retractable, auto-tensioning) configurations. Manual tie-downs are more affordable and work well when the same wheelchair is secured in the same vehicle each time. Powered retractable systems are faster and easier to operate, especially for caregivers who secure wheelchairs frequently.

All tie-down systems meet FMVSS 222 and WC-18 crash test standards when properly installed with compatible hardware.

Ideal For: Anyone transporting a wheelchair user who rides seated in their wheelchair during travel. Used in both personal and commercial vehicles. Manual systems work well for dedicated personal vehicles. Powered systems are preferred for commercial transport, medical transport, and caregiving situations where multiple different wheelchairs are secured regularly.
